Chelsea want to appoint Graham Potter as new coach in time for Saturday’s match against Fulham after a difficult meeting in London

Chelsea want Graham Potter in the West London derby on Saturday with Fulham.

The Brighton chief had positive opening talks with the Blues leaders yesterday and further discussions are scheduled for today before a deal is agreed upon.

The Blues’ owners were mercilessly sent off Thomas Tuchel, 49, yesterday morning after a summer of indignation after their takeover of Stamford Bridge with Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

Contact was quickly made with Brighton, who have given their agreement to start talks with Chelsea willing to pay at least £20m in compensation for Potter.

The top job at Stamford Bridge is losing Potter, and if a deal is struck quickly, he’ll be in charge at Craven Cottage this weekend.

If talks collapse, which is unlikely, Chelsea could speak with former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino.

It comes as follows:

The Seagulls coach was at the club’s south coast base yesterday morning for a club and training photo shoot ahead of their game in Bournemouth this weekend.

Potter was informed of Chelsea’s interest early yesterday morning and after coaching the former Ostersunds and Swansea City boss, he was taken to London to meet the Blues hierarchy, where they put forward a new long-term project under his stewardship.

Potter has been told that Boehly wants to move away from the approach of hiring and firing so prevalent under Roman Abramovich, despite Tuchel being sacked for only 100 days from his ownership at the club.

The decision to sack Tuchel, who won the Champions League, Club World Cup and European Super Cup as Chelsea manager, came just six days into a transfer window that was buoyed by her record spending of £259.1m.

Bohli and co-owner Behdad Ighbali, who were in the stands in Zagreb, were at the club’s Cobham training ground to greet Tuchel as he made his way to start to snatch the modest defeat.

But club chiefs told the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss that his time was up and despite his plea for more time, the meeting ended within ten minutes.

A club statement read: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record their gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club.

“Thomas will rightfully have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup in his time here.

“With the new ownership group reaching 100 days since taking over the club, and as they continue to work hard to move the club forward, the new owners believe this is the time to make this transition.”

Tuchel was “totally shocked” by the timing, but quickly packed his bags and left after saying goodbye to the staff.

Head coach Anthony Barry was left to receive first-team training, with the decision explained to the team by Boehly yesterday afternoon.

Tuesday’s defeat was the third of the season, with both Leeds United and Southampton having beaten the Blues in the Premier League already.

By contrast, Brighton had a solid start with four wins from their first six matches, which put them fourth in the table, three points ahead of Chelsea.

Potter will soon join his reunion with full-back Marc Cucurella, who raised £62m from his summer spending spree at Stamford Bridge following his move from The Amex.

Potter could bring coaches Billy Reid and Bjorn Hamburg with him to London after working with them at Östersunds in Sweden and Swansea City for the tournament.

He could be joined by Kyle Macaulay, a long-term recruiting associate at Potter’s, at Stamford Bridge.
