Aston Villa were hit by a powerful double whammy with Lucas Digne and Boubacar Camara set to miss the World Cup.

Aston Villa have confirmed they have been hit by a double hammer, with France internationals Lucas Digne and Boubacar Camara set to miss the World Cup finals in Qatar.

Yesterday, SunSport revealed that Steven Gerrard’s injury curse has returned with key midfielder Kamara ruled out for two months after sustaining a knee injury against Southampton last Friday.

Villa has now confirmed the seriousness of Camara’s injury and suffered a second blow with Lucas Digne.

Digne has been left out of the France national team after suffering a suspected stress fracture which also likely ends his World Cup dreams.

A statement from Villa said: “Aston Villa can confirm that Boubacar Camara injured his knee ligaments during last Friday’s win over Southampton.

“The midfielder was damaged during the first half of our game with Saints and was replaced by Douglas Luiz shortly before the break.

“As a result of the injury, Camara was forced to withdraw from the French national team for this round of UEFA Nations League matches and began a rehabilitation programme.”

SunSport understands that the devastated midfielder is currently in Dubai and is starting long distances to get back to fitness and hopes to be back early in the new year.

Digne’s latest setback is his third major injury case to Gerrard, who lost £26m in the summer with the signing of Diego Carlos due to a ruptured Achilles tendon in August.

Gerrard’s side have struggled in the Premier League this season after only two wins from their first seven games.

Phelan is currently 15th in the table after picking up four points from his last two games – after a run of three defeats in a row.

Digne and Kamara have started every league game this season, with Digne playing every possible minute in that time as well.

Their loss will undoubtedly be a major obstacle to Aston Villa’s chances of gaining some momentum ahead of the World Cup.
