He struggled to reach the heights of Villa during his first 12 months in the league.

Grealish admitted earlier this week that Souness’s criticism is hard to ignore.

He said: It is difficult [to ignore] When he’s on Sky Sports and everywhere around the training ground.

“He was a great player and won a lot but I don’t know what problem he has.

“I know he said a lot of things about not moving the ball faster but when I play for a manager like Pep Guardiola and he asks me to keep the ball as much as I can and have balls to take everywhere, that’s what I’m going to try to do.

“I always watch my matches and I am very critical of myself.

“I know there were games, especially in the second half of last season, where I wasn’t at my best at all.

“I’ll always have people on my back. When I signed for City and the price it came with, I knew it wouldn’t be a laughing matter, unless I started the way Erling Haaland did. That’s the only way for me not to be caned!”
