What is Disney + Star and where is it available?

disney plus star

Disney+ hosts a number of popular brands that you will undoubtedly know, such as Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. However, you may not recognize a star. On Disney+, the Star brand is available in select regions and gives access to a wide range of exciting shows and movies.

Here’s everything you need to know about Disney + Star: where it’s available, what it offers, how to access it, and more.

What is Disney + Star?

Disney+ mainly separates its content by brand. When you sign up for Disney+, the homepage prominently displays tiles for each brand: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. In most places where Disney+ is available (more on that below), there’s an additional Star brand board.

Broadly speaking, Star contains more adult-oriented Disney content beyond its traditional family-friendly image, created by its studios such as ABC, FX, Searchlight Pictures and 20th Century Studios.

Confusingly, in Latin America Disney has a streaming service called Star+, while in India it has Disney+ Hotstar. Despite the similar naming, this is not the same independent brand Star, though a lot of the content overlaps.

Where is Disney + Star available?

When Star launched on February 23, 2021, it was only available in select regions, although it quickly expanded to other regions. Now, in almost all countries where Disney+ is available, Star is included. This includes Australia, Canada, Europe, and New Zealand, to name a few.

There are some notable exceptions to Star availability: US and Latin America. This is because a lot of the content is instead available on streaming services exclusive to those regions (Hulu and Star+, respectively). For example, branded “Hulu Originals” shows in the US are instead “Star Originals” in the UK.

What can you watch on Disney + Star?

Star collects content from Disney’s studios and subsidiary channels, which includes original and licensed movies and TV shows. This means that if you’re in an area where Disney+ has a Star, Disney+ is arguably great value for money.

The exact show varies by region, but can include shows like Atlanta, Dopesick, Futurama, Only Murders in the Building, The Walking Dead, and movies like Death on the Nile, Nomadland, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Prey, and Summer Soul.

How much does Disney + Star cost?

If you have a Disney+ subscription, whether it’s monthly or yearly, Star comes as a default. It does not cost anything extra.

However, when Star was first introduced in February 2021, the cost of Disney+ soared. In the UK, the monthly cost has gone up from £5.99 to £7.99; In Australia, it changed from $8.99 to $11.99.

How do you get access to Disney + Star?

The easiest way to access Star content on Disney+ is to click on its box from the top of the home page. Once you get to the dedicated Star page, you can scroll through the themed rows to find something you want to watch. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a specific title, use Disney+’s search function to locate it.

If you can’t find something, it might be due to parental controls. Because Star has more adult-oriented content, a lot of it has a higher age rating than movies or shows elsewhere on Disney+. Our guide on how to use Disney+ parental controls has you covered if you want to adjust your settings.

A star is a great reason to subscribe to Disney +

When Disney+ launched, one of the criticisms leveled against it was that its content was primarily aimed at young people, especially when compared to competitors like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

However, Introducing Star has changed that, which is one of the main reasons you should subscribe. Now, Disney+ is a solid streaming service for all age groups.
